India A Edge Past Pakistan Shaheens in a Thrilling 7-Run Victory at ACC Men's T20 Emerging Teams Asia Cup 2024
Al Amerat – India A secured a nail-biting 7-run win over arch-rivals Pakistan Shaheens in the 4th match of Group B at the ACC Men's T20 Emerging Teams Asia Cup 2024, held at Al Amerat Cricket Ground on Saturday, October 19, 2024. In a high-octane encounter that went down to the wire, India A's total of 183/8 proved just enough as they held Pakistan Shaheens to 176/7, clinching a crucial victory in the group stage.
India A Batting Highlights
After winning the toss and electing to bat, India A got off to a solid start, with opener Abhishek Sharma leading the charge. He scored a quickfire 35 off 22 balls, striking 5 boundaries and 2 sixes, setting the platform for the innings. Wicketkeeper Prabhsimran Singh was even more explosive, smashing 36 from just 19 deliveries, which included 3 sixes at a strike rate of 189.47.
Captain Tilak Varma also played a key role, contributing 44 off 35 balls, holding the innings together in the middle overs. Nehal Wadhera chipped in with 25 off 22 balls, but the middle-order wobbled under pressure as Pakistan Shaheens' bowlers fought back. Zaman Khan and Sufiyan Muqeem led the effort with the ball, picking up crucial wickets at regular intervals. Muqeem, in particular, was economical, finishing with figures of 4-0-28-2.
India A’s lower order struggled to capitalize on the momentum, losing quick wickets in the death overs. However, late contributions from Rahul Chahar (4* off 3) and Rasikh Salam (6* off 1) pushed India A to a competitive 183/8 in their 20 overs.
Pakistan Shaheens' Response
Pakistan Shaheens' run chase began disastrously when captain Mohammad Haris was dismissed for a golden duck on the very first ball of the innings, bowled by Anshul Kamboj. Yasir Khan (33 off 22) and Qasim Akram (27 off 21) led the recovery, taking the Shaheens to 75/3 by the 8th over. But just when the partnership started to flourish, wickets fell in quick succession.
Omair Yousuf (2) and Yasir Khan were dismissed within a few deliveries, with Kamboj and Nishant Sindhu striking crucial blows. The middle-order effort from Arafat Minhas (41 off 29) and Abdul Samad (25 off 15) kept the Shaheens in the hunt, but Rasikh Salam's disciplined bowling pegged them back. Salam finished with figures of 4-0-30-2.
With 18 required off the last over, Abbas Afridi (18* off 9) kept the contest alive with some big hits. However, Kamboj’s brilliant last over sealed the victory for India A, restricting Pakistan Shaheens to 176/7.
Bowlers Shine for India A
India A's bowling was led by Anshul Kamboj, who was outstanding with figures of 4-0-33-3, including the prized wicket of the Shaheens' captain Mohammad Haris. Nishant Sindhu (3-0-20-2) and Rasikh Salam provided excellent support, each picking up two key wickets at crucial moments. The Indian bowlers maintained discipline despite Pakistan Shaheens' late surge, showing nerves of steel in the final overs.
